Northwest earns second place honestly, and second place here is not a consolation prize. They print their prices where a customer can find them, staff their phones with people, and treated client address privacy as an obligation years before it turned into a marketing line. Two asterisks keep them off the top row. That free first year exists only when Northwest also handles your formation; purchased on its own, the agent service bills at $125 per year. And the $100 per state tier unlocks only once you carry registrations in at least five states, which a company operating solely in Tennessee will never do. The durable Northwest figure for most readers is $125, which is $26 above us at every renewal.

3. BetterLegal

BetterLegal carries the smallest published number on this page, $90 per year, which our July 2026 sweep confirmed as the renewal rate. What that same sweep never located was a clear statement of how the first year bills, and on a comparison built entirely from published pricing, a missing figure counts against the entry. A price documented from start to finish ranks above a slightly smaller one that trails off into checkout. Readers who reach that checkout, read the first-year terms, and find them acceptable have located a genuinely inexpensive agent.

4. Rocket Lawyer

Rocket Lawyer charges $125 annually for agent service and holds that figure steady across every membership tier, with no introductory rate lurking underneath it. In an industry fond of teasers, that consistency deserves credit. The evaluation turns on fit instead. Rocket Lawyer sells a legal subscription platform, and the agent offering sits beside contract libraries and attorney consultations. An owner who leans on those regularly gets defensible value from the $125. An owner who needs a Tennessee address and prompt scanning is subscribing to an entire platform in order to use one line of it.

5. ZenBusiness

ZenBusiness writes some of the most polished onboarding software in this group, and nothing here disputes that. The pricing simply asks to be read twice. Bought by itself, agent service costs $99 plus state fees for the opening twelve months, then $199 per year from the second year onward. Since every year past the first is a $199 year, $199 is the number that belongs in your comparison. Set against our flat rate, the software premium works out to $100 annually, forever.

6. Bizee (formerly Incfile)

Bizee, which traded as Incfile until the rebrand, attaches free agent coverage to its formation packages, and the length of that freebie tracks the tier you buy, from a single quarter up to twelve months. If forming through Bizee was already the plan, those complimentary months are real savings. What they create is a diary problem: standalone coverage bills at $149 per year the moment the free stretch ends, and free stretches are precisely the kind of thing an owner forgets to put on a calendar.

7. LegalZoom

LegalZoom sets agent service at $249, auto-renewing, with no opening discount surfacing in our July 2026 check. It is the highest straight annual rate on this page. The premium buys the best known name in consumer legal filing. It buys nothing extra under Tenn. Code Ann. § 48-249-109, which imposes the same short list of duties on a $249 agent as on a $90 one: a Tennessee street address, availability during working hours, papers handed along without delay. Whether that recognition is worth two and a half times what we charge is yours to weigh.

8. Swyft Filings

The $149 Swyft puts on its page is a quarterly charge, not a yearly one. Annualized, that approaches $596, the steepest effective cost anywhere in the lineup, and no first-year softener appeared in our review. Quarterly pricing is flattering by design, since four charges of $149 register as far smaller than one charge of $596 even though they are not. Put the other way around, $596 buys six years of our service with a couple of dollars left over.

9. Inc Authority

Inc Authority hands over year one at no charge and stays quiet about year two. Reviewing their FAQ, then the premium package pages, then the homepage in July 2026 produced no printed renewal figure at all, which in this trade usually signals a price disclosed at the register or over the phone. A ranking assembled from published prices has to seat an unpublished one at the end. The free year is real. The blank space behind it is the thing to settle before you sign anything.

Tennessee Bills LLCs by the Member, Which Breaks the Usual Vendor Copy

Here is the Tennessee detail that national comparison pages routinely flatten. Both filings that matter to an LLC in this state are priced by headcount rather than by document. Articles of Organization, form SS-4270, cost $50 for each member the company has on its filing date, subject to a $300 floor and a $3,000 ceiling, under Tenn. Code Ann. § 48-249-202 with the fee schedule at § 48-249-1007. The annual report, governed by § 48-249-1017, runs on the very same scale.

Work the arithmetic and the tidy $300 quoted all over the web turns out to be correct only for companies of six members or fewer, since six times $50 lands exactly on the minimum. A one-member LLC does pay $300 a year. A twelve-member firm pays $600. A twenty-member operation writes $1,000 every year for a report that discloses no revenue whatsoever, and the scale keeps climbing until it caps at $3,000. Any vendor page showing a single Tennessee number was written for the smallest case and quietly left the rest of you out. One more budgeting note: settle with the state by card or electronic check and a processing charge rides along, which a mailed paper check sidesteps.

There is also a rumor worth putting down. If someone told you Tennessee flattened this fee, the source was SB 37, a bill withdrawn in January 2025 that never took effect. The per-member schedule is what the Division still collects, and the fee language sits in plain sight on the state's own Articles of Organization form, SS-4270.

What Tennessee Requires of the Agent Itself

Section 48-249-109 sets the standard, and it is short. Eligible agents come in two shapes: a natural person whose residence is in Tennessee, or a corporation, nonprofit, LLC, or partnership, organized in this state or admitted here as a foreign entity to transact business. Either shape carries the same condition, which is that the agent's own office occupies the identical street address filed as the registered office. The two are one location by definition, not a pair of related ones.

The address rule carries a wrinkle that catches people who have filed in other states. Your registered office must be a Tennessee street address given with city, state, ZIP, and county. County. Tennessee wants that field completed, which sets it apart from every other state in this comparison series, and a post office box does not satisfy the requirement under any arrangement. All nine services listed above can clear that bar. What separates them is the annual price and how quickly a document moves once it reaches the door.

The $20 Switch and the Clock Sitting Behind It

Leaving your current agent takes one form and $20. You file form SS-4534, titled Statement of Change of Registered Agent by Entity, and it lands with the Division of Business and Charitable Organizations under § 48-249-110. The PDF is posted by the state. The outgoing agent's cooperation is not part of the process, so no service on this page can hold your appointment hostage. The clock is what makes the address worth thinking about at all. Your annual report falls due the first day of the fourth month after the fiscal year closes, which is April 1 for anyone running a calendar year, and the portal starts accepting filings back in January. Blow through the date and no penalty invoice follows, because Tennessee charges no late fee for it. Administrative dissolution under § 48-249-604 follows instead, beginning roughly two months past due and opening with a 60-day statutory notice. That notice is mailed to the registered agent address on file. A company facing a $300 minimum every year and dissolution for forgetting it wants that envelope scanned the day it lands rather than stacked on a desk.
