Tennessee Defines the Agent Job by a Physical Address. A Document Library Cannot Stand at One.

Their Price Discipline Is Better Than Most

Give Rocket Lawyer this much: $125 a year for registered agent service, and the figure holds across every membership tier they sell. There is no introductory rate that quietly doubles, no cut that depends on keeping some other subscription alive, and no second answer waiting on a different page of the site. In a category where two-tier pricing is close to standard practice, quoting one number and sticking to it deserves acknowledgment before anything critical gets said.

The membership itself is also a real product. Contract templates, document review, attorney consultations at member rates. Companies that put those to work several times a year get their money back without much effort.

The Question Is Not Honesty, It Is Overlap

The agent service sits inside that platform. That is fine if the platform is what you came for. It is less fine if you came for the statutory role and are now subscribing to a legal service in order to use one line of it.

Which is worth testing against what the role actually is.

What Tennessee Is Asking For

Under Tenn. Code Ann. § 48-249-109, the eligible parties are narrower than most people expect. A natural person may serve if they live in Tennessee, which means an individual member who genuinely resides here can hold the post personally. Otherwise the agent must be a corporation, nonprofit, LLC, or partnership either organized in Tennessee or admitted here to do business as a foreign entity.

Then comes the condition that trips people up. Whoever takes the role must keep an office at the very street address listed as your registered office. Not an affiliate down the road, not a mail center that forwards to headquarters in another state. One address, doing both jobs, on the same line of the same filing. Post office boxes are refused outright, and the address has to be given all the way down to the county, a field Tennessee asks for that most states never mention.

Read that list again and notice what is missing from it. Nothing in the statute concerns document templates, legal advice, subscription tiers, or software. The job is a staffed door inside Tennessee and a person behind it during working hours. A legal platform can be excellent and still not be a door.

What the Numbers Look Like Side by Side

The $26 a year between us is not the loud part of this comparison, and we are not going to pretend otherwise. The loud part is whether you wanted the rest of it. One caution on our side of the table too: BetterLegal's yearly figure is $90, which sits under our $99, so read ours as near the low end of Tennessee pricing rather than the bottom of it.

The Move: Twenty Dollars, No Signature From Them

Worth knowing before you decide: these two purchases separate cleanly. Moving the registered agent on your Tennessee record does nothing to your Rocket Lawyer membership, and you can keep the templates and the consultations if you use them.

The move itself is form SS-4534 with a $20 fee, filed with the business services side of the Secretary of State's office. It names your entity and control number, then the incoming agent with a qualifying Tennessee address. Rocket Lawyer does not have to sign it, and their agreement to it is not a step in the process.

One sequencing rule applies regardless of who you are leaving. Get the incoming agent appointed before the change is filed, because Tennessee wants a working agent listed for the whole time your entity sits on the register, and a change still moving through processing has not taken effect yet. If you use the legal library, the $125 is defensible and the templates alone may justify it. If the only line you touch is the agent seat, you are subscribing to a platform to rent a mailbox with a person attached, and Tennessee will accept a cheaper door just as readily.
